Just across the Channel, Le Verger is a lovingly restored old house, wonderfully Gallic in atmosphere yet incredibly easy to get to. It is located in the Seven Valleys region of the Nord Pas de Calais, an hour from the ferry port and 40 minutes inland from the chic shops of Le Touquet.

Markets

The local food markets are a delightful way to shop. Fresh, organic fruit, vegetables and meat can be found at reasonable prices. There are also a variety of local sellers who bring specialist products (artisan cheeses, olives, home-made quiches, delicious jams and preserves – and more) to the market.

Brocantes

In the summer (approximately April – September) it is also worth looking out for brocantes, which take place in most local villages. These events are a hybrid of a flea market and a car-boot sale – people come and sell second hand goods from trestle tables and there is usually a thrillingly random selection of stuff to be picked up. Past treasures seen or acquired include antique furniture, a 1950’s espresso machine, a lemon tree, a retro typewriter and a hook-a-duck fairground game. All this appears amongst piles of clothes, books, records, coffee cups and roller skates. There are definitely bargains to be had, but an appetite for sifting is essential! The dates of forthcoming brocantes are usually advertised on signs at the side of the road or on leaflets that end up on your car windscreen.
